The Fall is now over a week old and each season I am just amazed at the true beauty we have here in the Northland. The Fall of 2005 will likely be one to remeber for the powerful hurricanes to the South, but for us here in the Northland the weather, has been better then ever, and it was no different again this weekend. As for the fishing, especially on Winnie, one can say it has been consistent but the pure size of the fish has been spectacular.

Many of the Winnie Walleyes are in the 14 to 16.75 inch range. We have seen many numbers of the 16.50 to 16.75 inchers this last week, making for some outstanding keepers.

The bite is getting more consistent each day, and the jigs and minnows have shown to be the preferred bait. Most of the better action this last week has come from the North shore, but the East shore near Muskie Bay is still holding some schools of active fish. The Muskie Bay Walleyes seem to be holding in the 5-8 feet of water. The deep weeds located in the 9-12 feet of water seemed to hold the best numbers of Walleyes on the North shore.

The 1/16 oz. MAXGAP jig tipped with a large chub or rainbow chub, was the presentation of choice. When jigging right now, the key to many more bites is keeping that jig and minnow floating off the bottom. Going to a heavier jig has shown less action, but as the bite continues to improve, many times the 1/8 to 1/4 oz. jigs will make for more success.

The jumbo Perch have shown themselves very well this last week mixed in with many of the Walleyes in that 5-8 feet of water. Here, the same jig and minnow combination have put those Jumbo perch in the livewell.

So, if you're headed out for those Ruffed Grouse, ducks or deer, remember the fishing here in the Northland is getting close to hitting that ever-so-liked frenzy. Either way, if you're headed out into the outdoors in the upcoming weeks, have fun and stay safe.

See ya out there,
