July 6, 2006
Just a notice, I had a cancelation on July 15. If anybody is interested in booking this day, please let me know. Thanks.
With the mosquitos thicker then normal and the sand and horse flies in full flight, the mid-summer fishing continues to show life on many of the area lakes, but the walleye action has shown a more inconsistent bite.
Winnie has been slow one day and very good on others. The slot limit again has shown many anglers the true meaning of success as we are seeing very good numbers of 20-23 inch fish, but there are also good numbers of the smaller keeping-sized fish.
With the water temps in the mid 70's, a number of presentations are working on Winnie. From the deep cranks baits and rigs with leeches and crawlers to the faster moving spinners, it seems one can't find an approach that means action as each of them is working good from time to time each day.
The walleyes are mainly concentrated on the deep structure, but over the last week or so we have seen a number of the walleye structures fill with perch making those humps look even better on that Vexilar. If you do find a hump or structure full of perch, keep searching on the hump, typically the walleyes have moved to the deeper edge. Most of the better action over the last week from the humps have come from the humps that top out in the 26-30 foot range.
It seems that the better action is coming from the smallest deep structure. Look for the larger mid-lake structures to heat up as the fish start looking for those young-of-the-year baitfish. With the young-of-the-year bite getting close, look for the shoreline bite to pick up speed as the fish work off of the large structure to those bait-infested weeds. Keep those jigs and minnows handy as the shoreline bite gets going.
Pokegama anybody? Pokegama is working well most nights, but last week with all the activity of the holiday showed an inconsistent bite that typically started late in the evening. The deep humps of the main body have filled with numbers of walleyes this last week. We have been running deep cranks or Lindy rigs with leeches and crawlers through them and found steady action. The deep-structure seems to have a good school one day and they seem to move for the next day. Keep moving until you find a hump that is filled with life. If all else fails, try a slip-bobber with a leech, it seems more times then not, the walleyes just turn onto the leech, if no other presentation triggers them.
So as the Summer finds more heat and less rain, the bite slides into a typical mode, but with some flexibility and changes in presentation, one can fill that livewell with your limit of fish.
Keep that sunscreen on and those coolers filled with water.
