My boat is for sale. Check it out here.

Summer heat in early Fall makes for some great day and night fishing in the Northland. From the local Pokegama lake to Winnie and Mille Lacs, walleye fishing in the area is hitting near top end and we are having unbelievable success with the #4 Salmo Hornet crankbait. The Hornet fever is one that is new to many anglers, but it is a crankbait that once you fish it, you will be hooked, just like the walleyes.

The Pokegama lake night bite is better then I have seen in the last five years. We are seeing many different sizes of fish, but the majority of the fish are in the 14-15 inch range. When trolling the #4 Hornet after dark, the preferred speed is 2 MPH and we are putting out 40 feet of line when fishing 4-6 feet of water. When trolling 5-8 feet of water we are running out to 60 feet of line. If one does not have a line counter reel, just a short cast with an extra pull of line will get you close. If you feel bottom, shorten the line length up. I would recommend running all crankbait with 4/10 fireline and the smallest snap swivel.

As for the Winnie bite, it is happening nearly all day and into the night and again the best action is coming from the #4 Salmo Hornet. Most of the active fish, even on the calmer days, are coming from 4-6 feet of water. Again, line length for the Hornets is at 40 feet, and the speed of 2 MPH. It seems, at times, that one can't go wrong on Winnie as long as you are shallow. We will continue to run the hornet and I expect the bite to remain strong, even as the water temps cool, the only change might be speed. Last year, even when the water temps were in the upper 40s the Hornets were productive, but we had the speed down to 1-1.5 MPH.

I can't say enough about this Salmo Hornet. If you're looking to get the upper edge on your friends or fishing partners, stop into Bens Bait and pick some up, or visit www.salmofishing.com for more information.

The Fall excitement is here and with all the nice weather, one still has time to enjoy some great walleye action come day or night.

See you on the water,
