Happy New Year to all as it is just a few minutes from 2007. I hope everyone has had a wonderful 2006 and is looking forward to 2007 being a year of many great tings including hot fishing action from the land of 10,000 lakes.

As for the bite, it continues to be an active one on Winnie, but the fish seem to be more on the small side this week. Most of the action continues to come from the mid-lake structure that tops out at 22-26 feet of water. This week it seems that the larger concentrations of fish have moved closer to the larger stucures of the mid-lake.

We are starting to see schools of baitfish, which typically has put a knife in the deep water bite. If one continues to move from hump to hump, one can typically stay away from the bait, which makes for better action. One other sign this week was the showing of the first eel pout of the year. This can be sign of the slow down as well.

So as the first ice bites start to slow down, one can still find fast action on Winnie. One will see going forward that a mixed bag approach fills the day with action. One can concentrate on those Perch during the mid-day and set up for the Walleyes both early and late in the day.

Look for the Perch in those deeper holes off the edge of structure, usually 28-32 feet. Here tipping a Lindy frostee jigging spoon with a minnow head will be more then they can handle. When fishing the Perch, don't be afraid of dropping that jig into the silty bottoms regularly as this builds a cloud of action near your hole which generally will attract those perch.

So as we head into 2007, the fishing opportunites are still alive, but please continue to use EXTREME CAUTION. ATV and snowmobile travel is recommended at this point.
