The cold snap has left and with it went the slower action that many anglers have been facing on many area lakes. For me, it was finally nice to see that warmer weather, as it seems like I have not felt the head shake of a fish for way to long. The cold snap kept me off the ice for the most part, but now with the warmup, we're back to chasing Perch and panfish. I hope everyone held up in the cold, and now the focus for me is getting that ice off the lakes and getting the boat back into the water.

With the last weekend for Walleyes now upon us, it is time to focus on those Perch and panfish, but better yet, it is the mark of the sport show season, which to me is the best indication that spring is right around the corner.

March 2, 3, and 4 look for the hot activity at the Rainbow Inn Garland room, where the seasonal Ray's Sport and Marine boat show will be held again this season. For those of you interested in hearing about crankbait fishing, I will be presenting a seminar around 1:30 on the 3rd.

Then the Jaycees Sport show will be held at the IRA Civic Center on March 16th and 17th. Here we will be holding seminars on Friday and all day Saturday with the common theme of crankbaiting for those seeking the local specie, from Bass to Muskie, pike, and Walleyes.

As for the fishing, Red lake again is where I have found myself in chase of those trophy Crappies. The action has finally picked up on the South end of the lake, but again the better consistent action has come from the Hillman's area of the lake. Most anglers are finding the best action about 5-6 miles out of Hillman's. With the numbers of years that these Crappies have allowed us to enjoy the size and numbers, they sure seem to be getting harder and harder to come by, and if you haven't had the opportunity to catch these monsters of the North, I highly recommend getting to Red, before this true once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes and goes.

Look for a glow red or blue frostee jig tipped with an active crappie minnow fished under a bobber to be productive and a jigging spoon with a minnow head as an attractor on the 2nd set up to be the 1-2 punch for increasing success on Red.

So as we close in on March, the opportunities to get out and enjoy the sport shows add just another chance to fill those late Winter fishing blues. If nothing else, stop by and say hello and talk a little fishing with us.

See you out there,
