Another week of Summer in the books and the Walleye fishing here in Northern Minnesota just seems to get better and better by the day and night. Due to the fact that I am running evening and night trips the next four nights, I am sending this week's letter out a day early. If you haven't had a chance to fish Pokegama before, I would highly recommend thinking about it as we are seeing some of the best fishing I have seen in years and the best part is the number of big fish that have come to the boat. This week we have landed four more fish over 28 inches with the largest being 29 inches and another three from 27-to-28 inches.

I will be looking at filling some evening trips starting July 6. If you're interested in getting out to Pokegama, please let me know. I have the evenings of July 6 and 7 open. The trip should start around 5 p.m. if possible.

Pokegama lake is the place for us as of late and the Walleye fishing has been very consistent and most of the better action over the last week or so is coming during daylight hours.

We have found great numbers of fish on most of the mid lake humps and bars that top out in the 18-to-30 foot range. The bite has certainly changed throughout the day on each of these spots, but having three or four spots that one can move to while the bite slows will increase the numbers of fish you catch. It seems that most of the spots will hold 4-5 active fish and then the bite will slow. Once the bite slows, we have moved onto the next spot to find the same results. Each spot that holds fish will continue to produce if one gives the fish a break for at least 15 to 20 minutes.

This week we have again found the night crawler and spinner combination to be the most productive. While fishing the spinner, we are using a 6-8 foot snell behind a bottom bouncer. Speed has played a critical part to the success as we have found that best speeds ranging from .8 to 1.3 MPH.

Pokegama has not only produced a nice number of keeper Walleyes in that 14-18 inch range, but we are finding incredible numbers of fish ranging in the 24-to-29 inch range again this week.

The night bite should become a factor this week as we hit the full moon cyle for June. Look for the next new moon of July to be productive. The July new moon is on July 15, with the two nights on each side of the new moon being a good time to concentrate your efforts on the night Walleye of Pokegama.

So with the consistent Walleye action on Pokegama, we have found less time to fish those Crappies and Bass, but a couple evenings we have found that the Smallmouth Bass and Crappies are staged up in those typical summer areas and most times very aggressive.

So with all those high winds as of late, no better time than now to get out and see what Pokegama and many of the other smaller local lakes have to offer.

Until next week, keep that pole bent!
