Happy Fourth of July. It seems like the opening weekend of fishing hit us, now we're talking about the middle of Summer. The middle of the Summer in the Northland typically means some hot and sticky days and those ever-so-nasty bugs. Well, the bugs are certainly upon us again this season and the bugs that most anglers talk about are those fish-feeding Mayflies.
Winnie has its shorelines filled with the shells and bodies of the Mayflies and from what I'm hearing and seeing it is a bug hatch to remember. I'm not real sure that I've seen a Mayfly hatch this large before. But with a great bug hatch, the fish will get more than enough food to keep those fish growing, and the little fish will become keepable by Fall. The bite on Winnie is in typical fashion as one must be persistent to find that active school of fish by jumping around from structure to structure and school of fish to school of fish and sooner than later one will come across a school that wants to eat those leeches or crawlers. The Salmo Hornet bite has again started to pick up speed on the shorelines of Winnie, but with the recent hatch, look for a short period of rest, then in the next week or two, we should see a great Hornet bite in that 6-10 foot of water. I'll keep you posted.
On the local scene, Pokegama continues to shine, as this week marked another week where the Pokegama Walleyes wanted those crawlers and spinners. We found most of the fish out on the 20-30 foot structure. When fishing the deep Walleyes, we are running spinners or bottom bouncers with a 1 oz. weight and keeping the speeds at .8 to 1.1 MPH. With the speed of the presentation, we are clearly covering more water and getting the baits infront of more active fish, which by day's end equals better numbers brought to the boat.
We are starting to see that night bite picking up speed and I would expect that by the end of July we will see a much more consistent bite after dark. The fish that we have been ctaching after dark are coming in the first hour and a half or sometime after 2:00 am. So, if you're willing to wait them out each night, one can typically get a good fill of those night eyes. As for the bait of choice we have found the #4 Salmo hornet in the Blue dace of the Pink Glow in the dark to take top honors this week.
I have a couple of trip openings for July 14th, July 17th, and 18th. These would be trips on Pokegama if anyone is interested in getting into the big fish action, please feel free to give me a call at 218-999-5710. With the new moon on the 14th, all these trips should be great. The trip would start around 5:00 PM and finish no later than midnight.
Until next week keep those lines tight!
