Summer patterns have set in and changing weather certainly plays a role in what the fish down under do and feel each and every part of the day. Those summer cool fronts will make for some challenges, but continued persistency will pay off. Keep moving until you find that active school of fish or trigger them. Not all the fish are on that same eating schedule and we have truely run into this as some fish want to eat and others just want to look at and smell the presentation. But those that want to look can be triggered to eat if you keep moving. Up your speed and watch the fish trigger. Don't be afraid of moving over 1 MPH, even with those Lindy rig set-ups.

The mid-summer patterns are here in full swing this week as many of the fish are holding on the deep structures of many bodies of water, but those shallow weedline are producing fish as the water temperatures hit the mid 70's. Pokegama lake again this week is proving to be a consistent big fish bite with good numbers of the 14-18 inch fish coming to the boat. We have continued to find an active deep water bite on Pokegama throughout the day and the night bite has finally started to show consistency.

As for the day bite, we continue to pull spinners or bottom bouncers in that 20-30 feet of water with consistent success. We have found that a 6-7 foot snell length on both the spinner and rig presentation seems to be the most productive length. We did see a couple days where a 4 foot and 8-10 foot snell lengths seemed to make a large difference in the catch rates. If the fish are showing up on the Lowrance or Vexilar and not wanting to eat your presentation, try make a simple snell length change, chances are this will trigger the bite. Again the speed for the spinners is holding in that .8 to 1.1 MPH range.

The night bite has finally set in from what I can see and most of the better action for us is coming near the midnight hours. We have found that most nights the Salmo #4 hornet in the blue dace or pink glow in the dark color combination to be the best producers, but some nights we have found those stick type baits to produce better numbers. We have found the most consistent action coming from the smaller humps and points on the lake that top out from 6-10 foot of water.

When fishing in the 6-8 foot of water, we have found the best line length to be at the 55 foot mark, when trolled at 1.8 to 2.0 MPH. When the fish are showing themselves in that 8-10 foot of water we have pushed the line length out to 65-70 foot to find consistent action. Keying in on areas of less thick cabbage weeds has certainly made a huge difference for us. Look for that night bite to continue on now through October. Remember the July full moon is on the 30th. Look for the three nights on either side to be the most productive nights.

Even I got a few big Pokegama eyes

(Back to back) one was 27" and 28"

Winnie has moved through the worst of the mayfly hatch and many of the fish are still showing up on the deep structure, but a number of shallow weeds areas are starting to fill with those crankbait hornet Walleyes. I would expect to see a very aggressive Salmo hornet bite here shortly and I hope to have a great crankbait report next week for you as I head back to Winnie this week for a few days.

Most of the deep water fish are changing their meal preference each day, with one day being leeches and one day crawlers. Look for those deep fish to like the looks of the faster moving presentations, as spinner presentations should work for you if you plan to head to Winnie.

So with all the fishing opportunities and presentations working right now, no better time than now to get out and try something out of the ordinary and look for the faster presentation to bring consistent numbers to the boat.

Until next week, get the pole bent with a Salmo Hornet walleye,
