The fishing again this week has proven to many of us that there is no other place to live if you like fishing Walleyes come day or night. The Walleyes have hit top end with the Salmo hornet during the day and the Salmo stings at night. Look for that September 26th full moon to be a night filled with numbers and big ones, but until then...I have two trips available at the September full moon time which are the 25th and the 27th, if anyone is interested, please let me know. If you are looking for the crankbait bite from last year, it is here on Winnie and get up there as the fish want the hornet and they again just can't get enough of the little bait.

We have had another great full moon cycle on Pokegama as we have seen the fish make a move to the shallows sand and rock structures located throughout the main body of the lake. We did find that the Gold Metallic Orange #12 Salmo Sting to be the most consistent, but the same color in the #4 hornet produced well at times. While running the Sting, we found that 2.0 MPH was the best speed and when fishing in the 4.6 feet of water we were running 40 feet of line.

When we would move out to 7-8 feet of water we would extend the line lengths to 60-65 feet to find better action. I look for the night bite to pick up speed as we move into September and the day bite should finally pick up again as those Pokegama Walleyes look to feed heavy and more often.

As for Winnie, we had a great #4 Hornet bite this week. Most of the fish were coming just on the outside edge of the weeds in the 6-8 feet of water. Here color seemed to change throughout the days as the top three baits seem to be the Hot Perch, Blue Daze and Pearl Orange. Speed has been critical again as they seem to want it at 2.0 MPH and if one is moving 2.2 or 1.8 MPH the bites seem to be less often or at all. The line lengths were from 37 to 41 feet.

We did have a few periods where the hornet bite slowed down and when this happened we would switch over to a jig and minnow to find the action picking up where the Hornets left off. While jigging, one should look for the large chubs or golden shiners to do the trick. Don't be afraid of jigging aggressively and moving at 1.0 to 1.5 MPH. The fish are starting to feed heavily and more times then not are willing and wanting to chase that bait at a higher speed, keep moving and watch those rods bend.

So as we head down the Fall home stretch, the bite on Winnie and Pokegama are picking up the pace and I look for the bite to get better as those Fall water temps continue to drop. Have fun and keep those boats out yet.

See you on the water,
