The true peak of Fall has settled in this week here in the Northland. The young-on-the-year loons are gathering in large groups on our waters. The leaves are looking brilliant and the Winnie walleyes are now schooling in the shallow water and those walleyes are getting frisky.
The time of the year that most anglers look forward to has arrived. The water temperatures are now getting close to that triggering 55-degree mark. In fact, by Sunday we should be at the 55-degree mark or slightly below that. The huge schools of bait have found that shallow water on Winnie and right behind them comes the large concentrations of hungry walleyes.
We have found the jigs tipped with shiners or large chubs to be the presentation of choice this week with the majority of the fish coming from 5-8 feet of water.
There have been a few fish that have made their move into Cutfoot but the better groups of fish seem to be filling the shorelines of Winnie. If you're heading to Winnie look for those spring hot spots as a good starting place and one shouldn't have to move too far from each of those areas to find fish. Keep in mind that if you are not finding action in 6-8 feet of water, don't be afraid of sliding into that 3-5 feet of water, especially if we have a little wind on the water. If that's not working look slightly deeper, say 8-10 feet.
With the October full moon knocking on the door and only two weeks away, I need to tell you that it should be the best full moon of the year. The September full moon was god on many area lakes, including Pokegama, and I expect the October Full moon to be exceptional. The water temperatures should be perfect for nights filled with good numbers and those ever-so-wanted big walleyes.
Look for the #12 Salmo stings in the suspending models to gain plenty of attention from those frisky night walleyes in both the Gold metallic orange and the new Metallic Clown.
So as we head into the heart of the October bite and many of you are already thinking about deer and duck season, don't forget about the fishing, we have the best fishing from now until the end of the month.
See you on the water in a LUND boat,
