Ice cold temperatures across the northland can be fearful to many, but for the anglers it is nothing but perfect conditions as those ice depths are pushing the 12-15 inches on many area lakes. In a matter of one week we have seen many of the deeper lakes go from open water in spots to ATV conditions and even some of the lakes in the area are seeing there first vehicle traffic. Extreme caution is always the word when heading to the ice and this year is no different.

As for the fishing, the walleye and perch action on Winnie is consistently good throughout the daylight hours on many of the humps. Here most of the structures located in the mid-lake body are producing numbers of fish with most of the action coming from those 13-inch walleyes. A minnow head tipped on a Lindy Frosty jigging spoon will be the top choice for most anglers as most of the walleyes are wanting the bait moving and if that fish shows up on your Vexilar and the jigging spoon does not trigger them, look for the frostee or plain hook with a medium chub fished under a bobber to do the trick.

Having the ability to move from hump to hump will increase the action and two things that one needs to help with this is a Lowrance H2O GPS, and an Eskimo portable ice house. The Eskimo ice houses are built with high quality and lightweight design for making that movement even easier. The Lowrance GPS with the Lakemaster trip will put you on the spot within the spot, due to the incredible accuracy. With all the technology that is available today, anglers clearly are missing out if there not taking advantage of both of these fine products.

The perch action has shown mixed results on Winnie but those areas where one can find rock in 14-18 feet of water seem to be holding the best numbers of those truly big Winnie perch. Again, one can use the jigging spoons and deadstick bobber method to find the best action. The perch bite will come and go, but when the bite is on, one can typically only manage one pole.

So with the Winter months and early ice season upon us, no better time than now to get out there and enjoy some of the best fishing of the Winter.

Stay safe and see you on the ice in an Eskimo ice house,
