Happy holidays to everyone and with the holidays here and the New Year knocking on the door I'm excited to announce a change with my column. I have teamed up with Glen's Army Navy and now I will be bringing you not only a new brand (Sean Colter's Sunrise Outdoors) to the column, but year-round, twice-weekly columns, along with a radio show that can be heard two times a week on 105.5 KQDS at 4:35 PM. I am very excited to be teaming up with Glen's. They will be providing all the equipment and more in the outdoor world in which I have found so much success, from the Jason Mitchell Elite Series rods to those ever-so-liked Salmo Hornets and Stings. So from here on out, if we're talking or writing about it, Glens will have it and from radio to the paper, we will keep you informed from the ice to the woods and so much more. Stop by and say hi or visit them at www.glensarmynavystore.com.
So with the new year closing in and the ice fishing season gaining ice thickness, many anglers have found some very good success when the weather stabilizes and other days the bite is slow at best. With all these weather systems coming in every couple of days, consistent action means mobility and I must tell you if you're looking for the two pieces of equipment that make mobility a key, look no further then the Eskimo ice houses and the laser sharp augers from Strikemaster. The hottest deal in the Northland this week is the Eskimo Quick Flip 3, now for only $289.00 ( which is about half price) and if you mention this column when stopping in to Glens to make the purchase, the Glens Prostaff will completely assembly the house for free while you wait or step out for a quick lunch.
So after getting that ice house, the ice options which take top honors for walleye right now are Red Lake, Lake of the Woods, and Winnie. There is some decent activity on Leech lake and Pokegama as well. Ice conditions on each of these lakes varies, yet most are seeing 13-15 inches of ice. As for the key areas, we have found the smaller structures located in the mid-lake of Winnie to be the area of concentration for us. Most of the structure has depth that tops out at 20 feet with the edges of the structure in that 22-to-26 feet of water. When the weather has been stable the bite remains best early and late in the day. But while staying mobile, one can find fish located off the edges of these small structures that will trigger to those jigging spoons or bobber combinations.
The perch activity is still looking better and better as Winnie is holding a good population of 9-10 inch perch. We have found some of the best action in 15-18 foot of water and mainly around those rockpiles located throughout the main body of Winnie. Some of the 28-30 foot wintering spots are starting to produce consistent numbers and as we head into the new year, look for these to be the preferred choice.
Lake of the Woods is staying more consistent right now than most. The area over the Pine Island in 18-24 feet of water has been the best bite and here again the jigging spoons tipped with a minnow head are all one needs to keep that rod bending.
As a precautionary note, many of the lakes in the area are filled with slush due to the abundance of snow over the last week or so. Please look for a snowmobile to be the best way of travel unless you are heading to a lake where a road system has been developed.
So with all the great fishing lakes in the area, no better time than now to get out and enjoy catching fish, and as you are heading out, stop by Glen's and find the best selection of outdoor equipment in the area as they are the outdoor specialists.
