The cold has certainly added some ice thickness to many of the area lakes, in the last week we have watched it go from 12 to nearly 17-20 inches. Most area lakes are reporting good-great travel and we are starting to see most travel by truck. Caution is still advised with vehicle traffic, make sure you know the lake as we still see numbers of lakes taking vehicles even with thicker ice. The slush report with the snow remains low, in fact, I have not found slush in my travels.
The walleye fishing remains good on Winnie as most anglers are finding success the last hour or two of each day. Areas of concetration still seem to be on mid-lake humps and bars with a few reports coming from the shoreline breaks. The depths range from 20-30 feet pending the structure. We are still seeing the jigging spoons tipped with a minnow head as the top producers. This week we have found a stop sign spoon or the new Macho Minnow from Nortland tackle to be very successful. The color combinations that continue to shine are the yellow/orange and the glow red. Glen's has a great selection of all the stop sign jigs and Northland tackle, so before heading to the water, make sure to stop in and pick a few up.
The perch action is in typical winter mode, with perch comnig from deep water, 20-30 feet to the shallow waters of 7-10 feet. For both depths, finding rocks will increase your chances in finding the larger perch in the system. Again jigging spoons with minnow heads will get most, but on days where conditions change a wax worm tipped on a smaller jig head like a Bro's Series jig will turn those lookers into eaters.
The panfish on many area lakes contniue to shine and Pokegama is producing some excellent sunfish/bluegill action. The depths here are ranging from just outside the weedlines in that 15-18 feet to deep water holes in that 35-45 feet. Look in the deep water from some fish to be suspended, but a number of them are holding within a foot or two of the bottom. Cutfoot continues to produce some nice crappies. Here anglers are finding them in 25-35 feet off of shoreline points and basin areas.
So with reports of a warm up happening, no better time than now to fill that tackle box up at Glen's and get out there and enjoy some excellent ice fishing whether you're after panfish, perch, or walleyes. I'm now booking some ice fishing trips, so if one would like to get out this winter drop me a line.
