Wow, what a week of cold! Now we have turned the cold into nearly a week of melting, well not quite, but I nearly put the shorts and flip flops back on. I hope everyone is surviving the what seem to be good old fashion Winter. As for me I have been fishing when time and weather cooperate, but I have been finding myself reading numbers of books and articles as if I can't be on the water or ice chasing them, the next best thing is ongoing education. I have a great book that I have found for you walleye lovers if you are wanting to increase your knowledge on the walleyes, take a look at the book called Walleye Wisdom by Infisherman productions.

Also, last summer when I fished and won the big tourney up in Canada, well the TV show information is finally getting close. I will be updating everyone in the next week or so as I have been told that it will air in February. Again, as soon as I get the informatio I will pass it on.

The January thaw has somewhat shown up here in the Northland, but the big push of extremely cold has has put the fish into a typical deep winter pattern. Many more walleyes, perch, and pike like to take a much closer look at the bait before getting the nerve to eat it and some just sniff it and swim away.

For many anglers that fish with a Vexilar or an underwater camera, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Many days this time of the year, one can bank on a day of fishing walleyes, perch, and pike to be one filled with what I call "sniffers" vs. biters.

So with the mid-winter bite in full swing, which we normally see each year after the first long cold stretch, there are a few tips that will help increase the chances of turning those sniffers into biters. Light line is a key this week. I would recommend a 2-4 lb. test. Another key is using a very sensitive rod and the key with the rods is a spring bobber, which has just over the last few years been introduced. The spring bobbers allow for the least amount of resistance on the line, allowing the bait to present itself as natural as possible. The other key part to the spring bobber is its ability to detect even the lightest of bite. From panfish, to pike and walleyes, the spring bobber's rods will day in and out turn "sniffers" into biters. I would highly recommend stopping into Glens Army Navy and adding one of the Jason Mitchell Elite Series spring bobber rod to your lineup.

The walleye action on Winnie continues to be best during the early and late parts of the day. With travel conditions being more than challenging this season, many of the humps located throughout the main body of Winnie have seen very little angling pressure and those humps are certainly areas that are worth fishing. If one can get to the small humps, most of them are producing walleye, perch, and pike action. Again during the mid-day, finding humps that top out at 26-30 foot, will help increase your chances, espically on sun-filled days. I would recommend finding a hump that tops out near 20-22 foot for those low light conditions. More and more fish are leaning towards the spring bobber and hook/minnow combinations, but the jigging spoons are still a very effective way to attract the ever-so-wondering walleyes.

So as the deepest part of winter settles in on the Northalnd and our lakes, the fish still need to eat and no better time than now to stop into Glens Army Navy and get your light line, Eskimo fish house, and that Jason Mitchell Rod. Our focus over the next few weeks or so will be bearing down on the Winter panfish. Many lakes in the area have some excellent panfishing right now and some of the better stories are coming from those Cutfoot crappies.

See you on the ice,
