Cold, cold, and more cold. The pattern sure seems to be one that just doesn't want to break, but consistency in weather typically equals active fish, whether you're after Walleyes, pike, panfish or Perch. This weather has had many anglers hiding indoors, but those who have braved the elements more times then not are finding consistent action for a variety of species on many of the local lakes.
The Walleye season, along with the pike are quickly coming to a close and no better time than now to put them behind you and start focusing on those Perch and panfish.
The Winnie Perch action continues to be consistent more days than not, most of the better action is coming from the 24-30 feet of water. Numerous anglers are finding action both on the East shore near the reclaim, and out from Ravens on the West shore.
The Perch are easy to catch at times, but when they get finicky, they can put even the best anglers to the test. Some keys to consistent rod bending days is presentation. Moving from hole to hole, every five minutes if the action slows, is one key. Keeping the tackle and line as light and small as possible, helps more times than not. Here using a 2-4 lb. test will usually outperform the heavier lines. Another advantage is taking a small frostee jig or plain hook and tipping it with a wax worm. These are just a few options that can help when that bite slows. When the Perch are active, stay active. When the bite slows, think slow and small.
As for the panfish, they can be the fish that define finicky. One minute the bite is hot and heavy and the next minute, you can't buy a bite. The same tips work well with the panfish. Keep moving, stay small, and keep the bait above those fish on that Vexilar. The Crappies feed up and if your bait is out of the feeding zone, it will make the difference in whether or not that bobber is sinking or that rod bending.
One huge advantage anglers can have in all situation is the rod that you fish with in how sensitive it is and no better time than now to stop in and see the newest rods on the market. The Jason Mitchell elite series rods are built for all applications, but they have taken these rods to the next level. Whether you want a Walleye, Perch, panfish, or Trout rod, the Jason Mitchell rods have you covered. One of the best features that I have seen with these Winter rods is a newly designed spring bobber. They currently are at Bens Bait in Grand Rapids and many of the larger stores like Gander Mountain.
If you haven't heard or seen these new rods, be prepared as I have had a chance to see them and get them in my hands and they will be a new weapon for me for years to come.
Until next week, May is coming soon!
