February and rain can mean a number of things to many, but here in the Northland it tells me that we might be having an early Spring or look out for the mosquitos come May and June, they might be the size of Gorillas. With all things considered, it sure was a nice break from the extreme cold, but for many of the lakes it is likely to be causing some bad travel conditions or even dangerous ice.

With only a week or so to go before the walleye season comes to an end here in Minnesota, the walleyes have proven to show increased numbers on many of the area lakes due to a great management plan from the DNR. We continue to see why slot limits and a stocking plan play such a critical role in making our fishing here in the Northland over the top.

Leech lake certainly is a true testment, along with Red, on why having a slot and stocking plan are critical. Leech lake has rebounded to the point that many more anglers are finding their way back there after taking nearly 6-8 years off of it. By allowing lakes like Leech, Red, Sand, Winnie and many of the others to hold significant numbers of fish, we allow the fishing pressure to spread out, making the fishing even that much better each and every time out.

So with the Sport shows already upon us, this week I want to talk briefly about some of the items that should be on your "to buy" list while heading out this Spring. For the last couple of years we have really found more and more walleyes on crankbaits, and getting a bunch of the #4 and #5 Salmo Hornets in a variety of colors is a perfect start. Then, when looking at a good cranking rod and reel combo, look no further than the 8' telescoping Jason Mitchell Elite series rod matched with a Diawa Linecounter reel. I would also recommend finding an Elite Series rod in the 7' length matched with the Diawa line coutner for pulling spinners. This was my go to bait day in and out once the water warmed up and on the days or parts of the days when the Salmos slowed. Another great piece to think about is bulking up on all the snap swivels, beads and spinners. Last but not least don't forget about that line.

Whether you're looking for that new rod and reel or looking to get a jump start on the accessories, look to Glens Army Navy to have all that you need as we start the countdown to that open water.

See you at the Sport shows,
