The light is certainly within viewing distance, nearly two weeks away from getting back into the boat. It sure has been a long Winter for me, but with my chores nearly done and my nights of no sleep starting, I can't tell you how fired up I am to get back to bending the rods. I hope everyone else is getting excited, we should be in for a great year of fishing! Hang on, the next ride is about to start and it is going to be six months of pure rod-bending fun, from the shores of Winnie to the island of Leech and the fun-filled adventures of night fishing. I can't wait!
Another week closer to opening day, in fact we are down to 16 days and counting. The week brought some cooler temperatures, but a few warmer days mixed with some serious wind and one can only be amazed at how quickly we can go from having ice covered lakes to open water. Most of the smaller lakes are ice free and many of the larger lakes are very close to being open.
With the open water here or very close, this opener 2009 should be one like many in the past, post-spawn Walleyes. Most times it can be either really good or a bit slow, pending how far along the fish are in the recuperation process from the annual spawn. One thing that we do know for certain is many of the walleye in our area will be wanting to eat those jigs and minnows. As we get closer and if the weather stays somewhat warm, we should see a much warmer water temperature then what we angled against last year. With warmer water typically comes an opportunity to jig and jig with a little more action.
When hitting the water on opener, key in on the water temperatures when it comes to how aggressive one can be with the jigs. If the water temps are in the upper 50's, keep that jig moving, if water temps are below that mark, look for the jigging motion to be more of a drag or a swimming motion.
Each year, jigs and jig color can and does play a critical role in the amount of action anglers have. On many of the area lakes in Northern Minnesota, the glow watermelon, parrot or firetiger will out produce many other color combinations. As for the jig style, one can hardly go wrong with a Northland fireball, or gumball jig. The main difference can be in preference of each angler. If you like a longer shank jig, the gumball jig is your pick. If you like a shorter shank jig with a bit more natural action from a head hooked minnow, then the fireball jig is the trick. With less then two weeks to go, no better time than now to drop by Glen's Army Navy and pick up all those needs for the up coming season. From the Northland tackle, to the Daiwa reels and the Jason Mitchell Elite Series rods, if you are in need of it, Glen's has it or will get it for you at the best price around.
So the top choices for opener 2009 in no specific order:
Red Lake
Winnie
Leech Lake
Bowstring
Mille Lacs
Splithand
Sand Lake
Round Lake
Pokegama
Mississippi River
Each one of these lakes holds a large population of walleyes, which one will you be heading to? Keep in mind that many of our lakes have a slot limit or even a different limit. Make sure you find out what the regulations are on that lake as it will make for a much more enjoyable time on the water this season.
