YIKES! Are we going to have open water? I along with many others are getting very close to thinking not. Keep your fingers crossed that we see some high winds, warm days or weather, or it could be a very packed river.

From low-water, drought-like conditions to flood watches and better yet Winter strom watches at the end of April, mother nature sure seems to be putting are nerves to the test this season.

So again the picture remains very clear the early season water temperatures will be cold if not still ice covered. With about two weeks to go until opening day, the conditions are looking less and less favorable for open water on all the lakes.

The DNR stripping on Cutfoot is going to be kicking off soon as the nets are getting put in, now the water temperatures just need to warm up ever-so-slightly and the annual stripping of Cutfoot should take place. If you haven't had the opportunity to see this awesome event, take the time to drive up to the stripping station on Hwy 46 near the bridge that crosses cutfoot and little cutfoot. It's a great event for the kids and all those interested in fishing.

With the high water and cold temperatures that seem to be staring us right in the face, what will that opening day bite be like? My guess is a number of fish could be in the three parts of the spawn. Look for the fish to be on the move from the spawning ground, typically the first flat area outside of the main spawning ground should hold good numbers of walleyes. The depths will vary from 4-6 feet out to 20 feet of water. Again the key will be slow moving presentations. Keeping your jig and bait small should increase those opening day catches.

As we see the final 14 days move upon us, one thing that will remain constant is how cold those water temperatures will be opening weekend, I will certainly do what I can to keep you upto date with temperatures and the movement of the fish. Like all other anglers, I will not be able to get the best sense of what is happening until opening day, but after that, I will keep you up to speed on daily changes.

Keep your thoughts of warm days over the next 14, as we will certainly need some warm rain or weather to help remove the remaining ice.

See you on the water very soon,
