We had an ever-changing week of weather which included high winds and cold temperatures, along with calmer winds and July heat, yet those water temperatures have not increased enough to see many of those spot-tail Winnie shiners.
The bite has been like the water temperature, slowly but surely getting warmer. With the memorial weekend here, and those water temperatures pushing into the mid 50's, we should see the peak shallow water jig bite for about the next two weeks or so. Most of the area lakes including Winnie, Bowstring, and Leech are showing themselves better each day out, some better then others.
Most of the walleyes are holding in the 8-12 feet of water. We are using the glow watermelon or parrot Northland Fireball jigs from 1/16 to 1/8 oz. as the bite becomes more aggressive and when the shiners are just a bit too large, we are finding that if you use the upper half only, the activity picks up. While jigging, we are now to the point of snap-jigging or rip-jigging. Most of the fish are looking for the bait that is jigged very aggressively and I would expect that we will see this until the walleyes pull from the shallow water.
With the weed growth starting to show up, these are key areas to check for active feeding schools of walleyes. While in search of fish with your Lowrance, look for those areas showing weed growth or softer bottom. Keep a close eye on the screen as many of the walleyes are staying close to or right on the bottom while in chase of the next meal. Working the windy shoreline is typically key to success while fishing shallow, but with the wind changing direction everyday, look for the weedbeds as a good starting spot.
We should have the first big week for spawing crappies next week, so if you are in pursuit of those crappies, we are getting close to the prime time to find them in the shallow bedding waters.
Happy Memorial Day weekend and we will see you at Glen's or on the water!
