Another week of up and down weather temperatures and the fish are trying really hard to find that shallow water, but we just can't seem to have enough warm weather to make that happen. The bite remains decent even with the cooler temperatures and all the frontal systems which are passing through nearly daily.
Leech lake has certainly rebounded. The walleyes' presentation of choice continues to be the 1/16 oz. Northland Fireball jigs in a glow watermelon color tipped with a shiner. We have found most of our fish in the 6-8 feet of water with the larger schools coming from the areas where the new weed growth is showing up. A snap jigging approach has triggered many more bites and it also helps keep the abundance of perch away. If you're looking for hot jumbo perch action, Leech is providing some of the nicest jumbo perch in that same depth of water. The better bite on Leech seems to start about mid-day and last until dark.
Winnie is following the common theme with Leech. Many of the typical spring areas are coming alive with walleyes. We have yet to see a big push of shiners in the shallows making the fishing a bit more challenging as the fish are more spread out than what we would like to see.
We are starting to see the first real signs of fish wanting to chase and with chase comes the #4 Salmo hornets. If you are a crankbait angler, look for that bite to pick up each and every day until the fish slide into the deeper water. We have found both the blue dace and the hot perch to be the better producers. On Leech, the viking color pattern has also worked consistently.
Look for the spawning crappies over the next 10 days in those shallow spawning grounds as the water temperatures are inching into the upper fifties and low sixties, which is the starting temperatures for that spawn.
As a reminder to all anglers, the Pikes for Vets are in need of donated fish and if you have a chance to drop off some fish, one can drop them at River Rat bait or West End Market. This is a great program that I would recommend supporting if you get a chance.
One final thought before heading back to the water as the fishing heats up and you prepare to start rigging or pulling spinners, look for Glen's to have you covered on The Jason Mitchell Elite series rods. The 8' cranking rod is built perfectly and the 6'6" spinner rod is all you will need for the upcoming high speed season.
See you on the water,
