Another Memorial weekend has come and gone and with the water temperature finally hitting the low 60's, the jig and minnow bite on many of the area lakes including Red, Winnie, and Bowstring are showing great action and stringers of catches.
Most of Winnie seems to be holding a very consistent shallow water bite. The depths that we have been finding most of the active fish are 4-8 feet of water. With the water temps in the low 60's we have found an aggressive snap jigging presentation to take top honor most of the week. The fish want it moving upwards of 1.0 to 1.2 MPH with the aggressive snapping of the jig.
The Winnie shiners are finally finding the shallow water and I would expect a good shallow water bite for 10-14 days. Another solid approach this week was the Salmo Hornets. We are running the blue dace and an occasional hot perch. The line length has varied some but it is consistently between 40-60 feet. The preferred speed this week was 1.6 - 1.8 MPH. Again we stayed true to the shallow water with 6-7 feet seeming to be the most active for the #4 Salmo Hornets.
Red Lake, all I can say is what a walleye factory. The fish seem to be at all depths with the best numbers coming from 6-7 feet of water on the South shore. We landed at Mort's Dock, which is just past Roger's campground, head straight out and once we found the 4-6 feet break, we caught walleyes for a 1/2 mile either side of Mort's. It is a great place to bring any angler and I would expect the shallow water bite on Red to maintain consistency for at least two more weeks. The water temps on Red are 62-63 degrees. Look for the crappie action to hit again sometime next week. Most of the South shore rock piles should be filling with what is left of those crappies in the next few days to a week.
So if you are looking for action, put on the jigs and head for the shallow water of most area lakes and one can bet that the poles will be bending. If you are looking for a new option, get some of the Salmo #4 hornets and start dragging them in that same water column, one will be amazed at all the different sizes and species one will catch.
Have fun and see you on the water in a Lund Boat.
