So with the another tournament season upon us, I must tell you that the excitement for fishing is now with my oldest daughter. On Sunday, we fished the AYA tournament as a team, along wtih Tyler Danielson, 8-year-old friend, and we won the tournment. Along with trophies and medals, we won a new Lund Boat, Mercury motor and trailer, but best yet, we get to fish the International Championship in August out of Kenora on Lake of the Woods. It was a very good time and best yet, winning a tournament with my duaghter made it even that much better. The tournament was on Pokegama and we brought 6 walleyes to the scale weighing 21.48 lbs. If you are at all interested in fishing this event, we will be holding another tournament next season on Pokegama. It was one of the best things I've done and this year we saw nearly 40 teams for this event. So with a tourney win behind us, now it is back to guiding for another couple of weeks and I must tell you the fishing remains very good!

Summer heat, bugs, and bugs, and more bugs equals deep water walleye action across many of the area lakes, including Winnie and Pokegama.

We have finally watched the summer weather move in bringing the much needed heat to warm them water temperatures, and with the heat comes the first major fish fly hatches and the fish get to the deep water making for some great deep water action with live bait rigs and spinners.

Over the last week we have mainly found Pokegama to be home and the fishing continues to provide quality with a number of fish coming to the boat each week on both jigs and minnows and our first sign of a crawler bite. With most of the fish starting to find the deep weedlines of Pokegama and our first few starting to find the deep water humps of the main lake, we should have some of the best daylight fishing of the year over the next couple of weeks, then look for the night bite to hit high gear around the full moon of July.

Most of the walleyes are coming from 10-17 feet of water on Pokegama again this week, but with the heat this week, look for those deep water 20-30 foot humps to fill with concentrations of hungry walleyes.

As for Winnie, the first major push to the deep water humps happen about 5-6 days ago and the walleyes are eating heavily on most days. With the spot-tail shiners starting to show themselves less and less in the bait shops, look for the live bait rigs with leeches and crawlers to take over. We have found a number of fish liking the spinners on Winnie. Here we are running spinners with both leeches and crawlers at .8 to 1.4 MPH and some days it seems this is not quite fast enough. As that water continues to warm, look for the walleye to prefer a much faster moving diet and no better time then now to break out of the old pattern and tie up with a shakee blade or inline spinner and watch the action heat up.

So with summer upon us this last week of June, look for the summer heat to really get the fish on many of the area lakes liking a faster bait and more leeches, crawlers and Salmo Hornets. The hornet bite is coming quickly and I will hopefully be reporting a good Salmo report in the next week or two.

Until then I want to thank everyone for another fabulous Angler young Angler tournament that I was fortunate enough to win this last weekend and my daughter and Tyler Danielson are already so excited for the trip to the International Championship that we will be fishing on August 16th.

See you on the Water in a LUND Boat,
