Angler Young Angler brings its 2nd annual walleye tournament to Lake Pokegama in Grand Rapids, MN. With nearly 40 teams and 80 kids ready to chase the big walleyes that roam the waters of Pokegama, the day is a sunny and perfect for some heavyweights to be brought to the scale.
Pokegama is a 6,700 acre lake with an abundance of smelt and certainly one filled with numbers of species. With the early season being much colder then normal, most of the walleyes are still staged on the abundance of weedlines based along the shorelines. The presentation will be mainly of jigs and minnows or crawlers.
Jordyn Colter, age 6, and Tyler Danielson, age 8, and Sean Colter would draw boat 34 from the start and would fish near the bridge for most of the day. With nearly 50 walleyes brought to the boat in the tournament, Team Colter would find 4 perfect slot fish at the 19.5 inch mark, then find two more overs at the 24.5” mark and the final big fish comes with about 20 minutes left in the day, pushing the 26.5” mark. The 26.5” fish put Team Colter at the top of the leader board and with the weight of 21.48 lbs. This win made them the Regional Champions and allows them to take the team to the International Championship on August 16th, 2008. The International Championship will showcase the top regional winners of each AYA event in Kenora, ON, Lake of the Woods.
The prizes for winning the Regional event were trophies, plaques, and metals, along with a new Lund boat, Mercury motor and trailer. The top prize for the International Championship is a 7 night/8 days stay for six at Walt Disney world. Jordyn Colter is so excited to have any opportunity to go to Canada and fish for a trip to Disney.
