A trolling we shall go, a trolling we shall go and keep the speed up to catch more fish. Yes, again this week, we are finding that the high speed tactics are working better then all other presentation. The walleyes come day or night prefer the meal moving at speeds as high as 2.7 MPH.
The July full moon has come and gone and it was one that showed a number of eaters on Lake Pokegama. We are finding the #4 Salmo hornet to be the bait of choice after dark. The pattern seems to be consistent with the July moon and the fish wanting a smaller bait. The August full moon is August 6th, so if the pattern continues into August, we typically see the fish wanting the larger stick baits some nights and others they still like the #4 Hornets. Our best colors as of late on the Hornets have been the Blue Dace and the Red-tail shiner. With a young of the year crawfish becoming the target for many of our walleyes come late July and August, look for the Pearl Orange and the Gold Metallic Orange to become the color of choice on many lakes over the next few weeks.
The larger stickbaits become a target in August and the deep rattle that is in the Salmo #12 sting is an option that most walleye can't resist. While trolling the Stings, look for a pumping motion to increase the number of strikes. One can pull the rod about 2-3 feet every 15-20 seconds with a quick drop back to allow the bait to stop after being pulled. This pulling/dropping of your rod typically triggers the walleyes to eat the Sting.
Now with all the frontal systems that are moving through our area, we are finding both during the day and night that if the walleyes are not willing to chase at the higher crankbait speeds of 2-2.7 MPH then one can switch over to the bottom bouncer/spinner rigs tipped with a crawler and pick up more activity. The signature series spinners at Glen's will be available in the next few days and the color options will all be worth having over the next 6-8 weeks as the walleyes will be switching the meals they prefer. We have found that the cotton candy silver #4 Colorado combination to be a preferred option, along with the rainbow Holographic.
While trolling the spinner combination we are working many different water columns but the outside edge of the weeds are the most productive on most days. Keeping your speed at or near the 1.2-1.5 MPH is key, especially during the passing of the frontal weather systems. When the systems stabilize, we have found that we can up our speeds to over 2.0 MPH and the fish again are willing to cooperate.
It’s a great time to be active on the water and with the water temperatures at peak for the summer months and the lakes filled with easy meals, one can find some extremely active fish by increasing your speed and more times than not covering water to look for the active fish. This is one of the best times of the year to be on the water and by taking the time to try some of the above mentioned tactics, you can and will have success while fishing those summer walleyes.
