The yo-yo like weather temperatures over the last week have thrown a curve ball at us a few days this week, but the overall Fall patterns are setting in on Winnie as the shoreline structures seem to be filling with all species of fish more and more each day.

Winnie is certainly a great jig and minnow lake through many of the open water months and those times of the Fall frenzy jig bite are showing themselves as that water temperatures drops into the low 60's this week. The jigs are working along with the Salmo Hornets and spinner and crawler combinations. In fact, one can literally find groups of fish throughout the day that will like one presentation, and within an hour or so, switch their preference to one of the other two.

Most of the typical shoreline hotspots are now holding good numbers of fish and the wind is playing a key role into which group will be more active each day out. The common depths again this week seem to be the 5-8 feet of water and if the wind is blowing hard we have found fish up in 3-4 feet.

The areas holding the better concentrations right now are those with good weedline structures. On the windy days those shallow rock areas seem to come alive. Not only are these areas holding numerous walleyes, but most of them are producing nice pike and perch.

The crappies have made their big move over the last week on Winnie and many of the other crappie lakes. We are now locating most of the crappies in that deeper water away from those weedline structures that they have called home all summer. We are tipping a 1/16 oz. jig with either twister tails or crappie minnows and fishing them either vertically or long line jigging them in the open water.

So as we get deeper into the heart of fall, the bite on many area lakes is setting in and the best fishing for the frisky walleyes is knocking on the door. Even with all the other outdoor activities that are getting started now, don't put your boats and fishing equipment away just yet. The best fishing of the season will be over the next six weeks and some of the largest fish of the year can come to the boat.

See you on the water in a LUND boat,
